George V "Dated Die" Issue
1935 - 1937
Domestic and International Rates

A. Introduction

In 1935, the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN) regained the contract to produce stamps for the Canada Post Office. A new definitive series was released on June 1, 1935 consisting of George V low value denominations (1 cent- 5 cents, 8 cents), a 6 cent air mail stamp, as well as higher value pictorial stamps ( 10 cents - $1.00) showing scenes from across Canada.

George V Image

The image of George V used for the 1935 definitives was based on a photograph by Lafayette Portrait Studios and engraved by Edwin Gunn. The following photographs of the Gunn engraving are in the National Archives of Canada.

Date of Manufacture

The issue has been called the "Dated Die" issue because, for the first time, the dies of the stamps bore a date indicating the year of manufacture of each design. The date on the lower value stamps is located on the left side within the inner oval frame at the King's shoulder level.
