1942-1945 War Period
United States Rates and Fees
The rates to the United State for the first year of the War Issue were unchanged from those in effect during the "Mufti" issue period (1937-42). However, on April 1, 1943, a 1 cent War Tax was added to the first weight letter, air mail and post card rates.
1. Letter Rates
a) To March 31, 1943
The letter rate was 3 cents for the first ounce and 2 cents for each additional ounce.

b) From April 1, 1943
On April 1, 1943, an additional 1 cent War Tax was imposed on the first weight step letter rate to the United States. The rate was 4 cents for the first ounce and 2 cents for each additional ounce.

2. Post Card Rate
a) To March 31, 1943
The post card rate was 2 cents.

The post card rate was increased to 3 cents because of the addition of the 1 cent War Tax.

3. Air Mail

The air mail rate was 6 cents for each ounce and 6 cents for each additional ounce.

b) From April 1, 1943
A one cent War Tax was added to the first weight step air mail rate. The air mail rate was 7 cents for the first ounce and 6 cents for each additional ounce.

4. Printed Matter
The printed matter rate to the United States was 1 cent for each two ounces. The War Tax was not added to the printed matter rate.
