Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories came into existence in 1870 when control of the North-Western Territory was transferred by the British government and the Hudson's Bay Company sold Rupert's Land to Canada.

The Northwest Territories floral emblem stamp was issued on March 23, 1966.
The Northwest Territories' floral emblem, the mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), was adopted in 1957. The mountain avens is a member of the rose family, and grows in the Eastern and Central Arctic on high, barren rocky ground. It has narrow basal leaves, and supports a single white flower on a short stem.

Yukon
In 1898, the Yukon district of the Northwest Territories became a separate territory.
The Yukon floral emblem stamp was issued on March 23, 1966.
Yukon's floral emblem, the fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium), was adopted in 1957. The hardy magenta fireweed blooms along roadsides, river bars and clearings from mid-July to September. It is one of the first plants to appear in burned areas.
