The Red River Settlement was a colony on the banks of the Red River near the mouth of the Assiniboine River (in present-day Manitoba). The colony was founded in 1811–12 by Thomas Douglas, 5th earl of Selkirk , a Scottish philanthropist, who obtained from the Hudson's Bay Company a grant of 116,000 square miles (300,000 square km) in the Red and Assiniboine river valleys. The official name of the settlement was Assiniboia.
The Red River Settlement commemorative stamp was issued on May 3, 1962.
