1958 First Elected Assembly in Canada

The Nova Scotia House of Assembly is the oldest in Canada. The 1st General Assembly of Nova Scotia sat between October 2, 1758 and December 4, 1759. Its members had been elected in the 1758 Nova Scotia general election. The Assembly sat at the pleasure of the Governor of Nova Scotia, Charles Lawrence. The assembly was dissolved on August 13, 1759.

The 5 cent stamp issued on October 2, 1958, featuring the mace and the Speaker's chair, commemorates the bicentennial of the first House of Representatives which met in Halifax in 1758. Credit for the design was given to Carl Dair and Gerald Mathew Trottier.

A commemorative slogan cancellation was also produced for use in Halifax:
