a) Advanced Postage

In some cases, the post office would advance short paid postage in order to avoid delay and postage due charges to the addressee. The sender would receive a card advising that postage was advanced and requesting that postage on the amount due be affixed to the card and mailed to the post office. Advanced postage was payable at single deficiency.
