Low-Value and Medium Value Mammal Definitives : 1988 - 1992

Canadian mammals were featured on the 19 low-value and medium value definitive stamps in use from 1988 to 1990. The  low-value definitive stamps consisting of 7 denominations ( 1c, 2c, 3c, 5c, 6c, 10c, 25c) showing small mammals were issued on October 3, 1988. The 12 medium value definitive featuring large mammals indigenous to Canada were issued in four sets of three stamps each from 1988 to 1990.

In-Period Mixed Definitive Stamp Issue Franking

The cover below illustrates the eclectic franking which is often encountered on 1980s covers. Traditionally, mixed frankings are not appreciated as much as single usages but collectors of the late 20th century period accept that beyond basic letter rates, covers will have lots of different stamps. The challenge is to find covers on which all the stamps are in-period.

Out-of- Period Discounted Postage Covers

The above cover should not be confused with covers franked with out-of-period discounted stamps. Since Canadian stamps dating back to the 1950s are so plentiful they can be purchased in quantity for less than face value. Stamp and postal history dealers are the most prolific users of discounted postage stamps. It is unusual to see current stamps on mail sent by vendors. The use of discounted postage has made it more challenging for collectors to obtain rate covers with in-period stamps.

High Value National Parks Definitives : 1979 - 1989

Canada's National Parks were featured on the high-value definitive stamps in use from 1979 to 1989.


First Release: 1979

The first release of National Parks definitives was on January 29, 1979 consisting of the $1 Fundy National Park and $2 Kluane National Park stamps.

The stamp was designed by Ron Bolt and printed by the Canadian Bank Note Co. (CBN).

1982 - 1986 Releases

Canada Post Corporation issued an additional six National Park high-value definitive stamps from 1982 to 1986. Two of the stamps, the  $1 Glacier National Park and the $2  Banff National Park replaced the first release Fundy and Kluane stamps respectively. New denominations were introduced  as well. Waterton Lakes was featured on a $1.50 stamp and Point Pelee National Park was shown on the $5.00 stamp. The Point Pelee stamp was subsequently replaced by the $5.00 La Mauricie National Park definitive stamp.

The stamps are shown in order of denomination and not by issue date.

$1 Glacier National Park



The $1.00 Glacier National Park stamp was designed by Brent Laycock. printed by the CNN,  and issued on August 15, 1984.

 The $5.00 La Mauricie National Park stamp design was based on a painting by Lauréat Marois. The stamp was first printed by the CBN, and issued on March 14, 1986. In June 1987, the British American Bank Note Company printing was issued.
