The Cameo Issue : Introduction

[This article was originally posted on July 19, 2010. Since then, essays from the National Archives of Canada have been added as well as more covers.]

The Wilding definitives, first introduced in 1954, were replaced by the Cameo definitives in three stages from 1962 to 1963:

1. October 3, 1962 : 5 cent denomination

2. February 4, 1963 : 1 cent and 4 cents denominations

3. May 2, 1963 : 2 cent and 3 cent denominations

(The 6 cent value was not replaced)

The rich colours and design simplicity make this a visually appealing series of stamps. The design was executed by Mr. Ernst Roch of Montreal.

1. October 3, 1962 : 5 cent denomination

1973 Nellie McClung

Nellie McClung (1873 - 1951) was one of Canada's "Famous Five" who fought for the recognition of women as persons under the British North America Act. The Famous Five's successful court challenge in 1929 allowed women to be appointed to the Senate of Canada, a privilege that had previously been denied them.

McClung was a campaigner for female suffrage, temperance, urban renewal, and social welfare. She was a member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly from 1921 to 1926 where she worked on issues affecting women and children. She was the first female Director of the Board of the Governors of the CBC and was chosen as a delegate to the League of Nations in Geneva in 1938.

The Nellie McClung commemorative stamp celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth was issued on August 29, 1973.

1973 Scottish Settlers

On September 17, 1773, 200 Highland Scots settlers on board the "Hector" dressed in full Scottish regalia went ashore in what is now Pictou County, Nova Scotia. In 1765 the British Government had approved a large land grant in the area of Pictou County to a group of men from Philadelphia. It was on this land that the Highlanders settled.
