1973 Nellie McClung



Nellie McClung (1873 - 1951) was one of Canada's "Famous Five" who fought for the recognition of women as persons under the British North America Act. The Famous Five's successful court challenge in 1929 allowed women to be appointed to the Senate of Canada, a privilege that had previously been denied them.

McClung was a campaigner for female suffrage, temperance, urban renewal, and social welfare. She was a member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly from 1921 to 1926 where she worked on issues affecting women and children. She was the first female Director of the Board of the Governors of the CBC and was chosen as a delegate to the League of Nations in Geneva in 1938.

The Nellie McClung commemorative stamp celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth was issued on August 29, 1973.

1973 Scottish Settlers

On September 17, 1773, 200 Highland Scots settlers on board the "Hector" dressed in full Scottish regalia went ashore in what is now Pictou County, Nova Scotia. In 1765 the British Government had approved a large land grant in the area of Pictou County to a group of men from Philadelphia. It was on this land that the Highlanders settled.

1973 Prince Edward Island
Entry Into Confederation Centennial

Prince Edward Island entered Confederation on July 1, 1873, becoming the seventh province to do so. The P.E.I. stamp designed by Anthony Mann features oak trees. According to tradition, the large oak, part of the arms of Prince Edward Island, represents England and the saplings the three counties (Kings, Queen, Prince) of the Island.

1973 J.E.H. MacDonald

J.E.H. MacDonald (1873- 1932), one of Canada's leading painters and a member of the Group of Seven, was born in Durham, England, and emigrated to Canada in 1887 with his English mother and Canadian father. He studied at the Hamilton Art School and the Central Ontario School of Art and Design, in Toronto, Ontario. MacDonald worked at Grip Ltd. from 1895 to 1911, when Lawren Harris persuaded him to start painting full time. In 1922, MacDonald accepted a full-time teaching position at the Ontario College of Art.

MacDonald's 1921 painting, The Solemn Land, was the model for the 25 cent Centennial definitive stamp issued on February 8, 1967.

2. "Mist Fantasy, Northland"

Canada Post Office commemorated the 100th anniversary of MacDonald's birth with the release of a 15 cent commemorative stamp featuring his 1922 canvas, Mist Fantasy Northland.

3. "Montreal River"

In 1995, Canada Post issued a set of stamps to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Group of Seven. Macdonald's 1920 painting Falls, Montreal River was reproduced on a souvenir sheet.
