1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation




Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2, 1953. The Canadian Post Office issued a 4 cent Coronation to commemorate the event on June 1, 1953. I have posted a separate article dealing with the design of the stamp here.

1953 Royal Tour Re-fueling at Gander

On November 23, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip left London for a tour of the Commonwealth. The only Canadian stop was for re-fueling at Gander, Newfoundland.

1953 : Wildlife Series

From 1953 to 1957 the Canadian Post Office Department issued stamps depicting Canada's wildlife. The issue dates coincided with National Wildlife Week.

The 1953 set, issued on April1 1953, consisted of three stamps:

  • 2 cents Polar Bear
  • 3 cents Moose
  • 4 cents Bighorn Sheep
The 2 cent stamp was designed by John Crosby. Emmanuel Hahn designed the 3 cent and 4 cent stamps.
